Getting to the airport? Gautrain or Car?

My job requires that I do a bit of traveling, especially between Pretoria and Cape Town. I have offices in both towns and spend 40% of the time in each. As an aspirant communist, I was opposed to the Gautrain since the idea came about when Mr Sam Shilowa was Premier of Gauteng. Yes, he was once a Premier of the province. Don’t let your memory of that be erased by his disputed Presidency of his party. I believed then, like my friend, Themba, still believes now, that the Gautrain is meant to . . . Solution for the ANCYL by a naive member

I am a member of the ANCYL at Ward 23, Musa Dladla Region (North Coast), Empangeni in KwaZulu Natal. Due to the nature of my work, it makes it impossible to be a meaningful participant in the daily life of the organisation. As a result, I suspect I am mostly naive of the "bigger picture" and the "polotical context" of certain developments relating to the ANCYL. However, since I first joined the ANC in 1993 and been following political developments in the liberation movement since 1987, I feel . . . Continue reading this article

Is Malema still the ANCYL President?

NB: Views expressed here may be subjective and have no legal merit in the ANC or elsewhere. They are a matter of opinion that should not be taken seriously. The fact that the NDCA has accepted the appeal for mitigation and aggravation and referred the matter to the NDC means the sentences on the guilt verdicts that the NDCA upheld cannot take effect until that process is concluded. Even after the NDC issues sentences after the mitigation/aggravation process, the applicants will reserve the . . . Continue reading this article

(un)Scientific blind spot of carbon emissions brouhaha

Disclaimer: While the views expressed here are subject to Terms of Use of this blog, I wish to emphasise that the views expressed here do not represent the views of my employer as a person or as an institution. This is merely a bad attempt at satire intended for those with basic science knowledge and a large sense of humour. It is not a scientific paper nor official policy of anything. Charles Darwin would have us believe that we evolved from apes. I understand most of science accept Darwin's . . . Continue reading this article

I choose the demagogues, for now

I read with interest, the speech by Cde Blade Nzimande, the SACP General Secretary, to the Central Committee of COSATU. As always, I was interested in how the vanguard of the working class will inspire hope among millions of unemployed youth and casualised workers. I had also read the text of the Political Report to the 2nd Special National Congress of the SACP held in December 2009 for the same reasons a few years ago.I do not have paid membership of the SACP and my Young Communist League of South . . . Of beauty and women abuse

In  a SASO BPC trial in May 1976, Steve Biko was asked, among others, about the meaning of the phrase "black is beautiful." His reply was, "I think the slogan has been meant to serve and I think is serving a very important aspect of out attempt to get at humanity. You are challenging the very deep roots of the Black man's belief about himself. When you say 'black is beautiful' what in fact you are saying to him is: man, you are okay as you are, begin to look upon yourself as a human being; now . . . Continue reading this article

Tax breaks for the poor eroded by being taxed to death

Anatole France, a French writer, once wrote, "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal their bread." Contained in this quote is the explicit hypocrisy of equality in a capitalist democracy. Among the most taxed categories of persons in South Africa are motorists. Their taxes are applied equally regardless of the income differences, which obviously squeezes the poorer more. Obviously economists will tell you that . . . Continue reading this article

Revolution vs Coup – 2011 Snapshot

For the purposes of this text, we will pretend that a revolution is the change of government that is removed, by any means, on the basis of it being unjust (noting that justice is not universal). We will further pretend that a coup is an opportunist, and unjust, removal of a legitimate government by a faction of society and/or military for its own narrow ends. All the country information that appears after each country heading have been copied from Wikipedia as is. I, therefore, take no responsibility . . . Continue reading this article

Spend less time on Facebook

More than a year ago, I wrote about the Fallacy of Facebook addiction. My view remains unchanged, it is not possible to be addicted to Facebook. I like to know what the 54 members of my extended family are up to and 63% of them are on Facebook. Instead of calling or sending sms to each of them, I just go to their profiles and check. It's not Facebook I am addicted to, but my family. If you think Family addiction is a problem, try eating rice, cucumber, avocado and salmon rolled with nori from an . . .
