Response by Prof Stephen Coleman on the public lecture The Lost Art of Listening: The Missing Key to Democratic and Civil Society Participation by Prof Jim Macnamara

Thank you Jim.

I listened, with growing admiration… great project. We want more of it.

Your subject could not be more politically timely, for we’re living through what increasingly feels like an insurgency of the unheard.

For most of my lifetime, it’s been complacently assumed that the unheard would simply fade away, that’s not always the verb that was used, into solemn silence, interrupted by occasional bouts of vulgar peak and localised self arm. Leave them alone, exclude them from polling models, because they won’t vote. Humour their audacious resentments. And tell them what’s best for them, from how to bring up their kids, to how to speak.

Saving the Soul of the ANC by Rev Frank Chikane

Reverend Frank Chikane presented a document titled ‘Saving the Soul of the ANC’ to the national officials of the ruling party. Here is an executive summary of the document:

THE SOUL OF THE ANC UNDER ATTACK

The Soul of the ANC is under severe attack not from external forces as we would have thought, but from its own members and leaders. At the beginning, and in our regular ‘balance of forces’ analysis since the unbanning of the liberation movements, we expected the attack and threats to come from external (counter-revolutionary) forces and did not think much about internal threats, which can be considered as ‘counter-revolutionary’. In fact, we missed the point that the counter-revolutionary project could be planted within the Movement itself.

TRIBUTE AND REFLECTION ON MTHOLEPHI MTHIMKHULU – Joel Netshitenzhe

Programme Director
Ms Halalisiwe Mthimkhulu and the family
Leaders of the religious community
Leaders of the ANC and the Alliance
Friends, colleagues and comrades

I wish to express my profound appreciation for the opportunity to take part in this celebration of a life well-lived in the service of the people.

Many of us, on receiving the invitation to this remembrance ceremony, did wonder whether, some eighteen months after Mtholephi Mthimkhulu left us, it is appropriate to rekindle the grief in our hearts, to again stare into the dark void that Makhulukhulu has left, and to relieve moments that are now consigned to the bosom of memory. But we drew comfort from the knowledge that, it is both necessary and unavoidable that we should, over and over again, remind ourselves of Mtholephi’s life. For contained in it is a frame of reference of what a servant of the people should be.

The ANCYL wishes Mama Winnie a speedy recovery.

The ANCYL wishes Mama Winnie a speedy recovery. We want to to say to Mama Winnie the nation wishes you urgent recovery. We hope that in times like these you will show resilience like you did against the defunct apartheid regime. Please continue to show courage against the illness that want to conquer your spirit. We, as the ANCYL, have hope that you will fight till the full recovery. What will the nation be without you in these trying times when there are some in our movement and some outside our movement who are hell-bent in destroying the movement that you dearly fought for with many comrades. The movement that you shouldered under difficult times. Your wisdom and guidance in these times is more than required. Your experience cannot be kept away from us in these times. We love you Mother of the Nation.

Make your history, make your own heroes and speak about them not Kalushi

The ANCYL has noted with dismay the desperate attempt by  EFF which wants to use the struggle icon of the movement for their own narrow, selfish objectives. The EFF has been insisting regardless of many attempts by the family of Solomon Kalushi Mahlangu indicating that EFF has no right nor responsibility to hold lectures about Kalushi because he was never a member of the EFF. The EFF wants to use the name of Umkhonto We-Sizwe combatant Kalushi to first and foremost distort history, his association and membership  affiliation of Kalushi Mahlangu to the African National Congress. They want to use what Kalushi stood for against his organization that he was part of and the organization that he joined voluntarily up until his death the ANC. Solomon had no other home outside of the ANC. Why claim what is not yours?

Your Excellency, Vice-President Wamalwa of the Republic of Kenya and President of the Conference
Mr Juan Somavia, Director-General of the ILO
Distinguished delegates
Honoured guests
Ladies and Gentlemen

It would seem right that I should start by introducing myself. I come from Africa. I am employed. I am certain the job I do qualifies for the description ‘decent work’. Though I would not like to broadcast this matter too loudly, I would say I earn a living wage.

NUMSA CENTRAL COMMITTEE PRESS STATEMENT

CENTRAL COMMITTEE PRESS STATEMENT

7th March 2013

Numsa Headquarters

People always have been the foolish victims of deception and self-deception in politics, and they always will be until they have learnt to seek out the interests of some class or other behind all moral, religious, political and social phrases, declarations and promises. Champions of reforms and improvements will always be fooled by the defenders of the old order until they realise that every old institution, however barbarous and rotten it may appear to be, is kept going by the forces of certain ruling classes. And there is only one way of smashing the resistance of those classes, and that is to find, in the very society which surrounds us, the forces which can—and, owing to their social position, must—constitute the power capable of sweeping away the old and creating the new, and to enlighten and organise those forces for the struggle.”

(Vladimir Ilyich Lenin, The Three Sources and Three Components Parts of Marxism, March 1913)
